Liberty should not be Gagged
Good Evening My Children. Your den mother here wants to remind all Americans that we face a threat to our internet liberties. We face a threat that is hidden behind stopping piracy. This threat is in the disguise of the Protect Intellectual Property and the Stop Online Piracy Act (PIPA/SOPA). My children this is nothing more than threatening a VERY VERY big chunk of websites on the internet. If this act goes through, any site that has any video or image that is not their personal property or has permission to use said videos/images will be knocked off the web.
This act will NOT stop piracy. There are so many holes that will permit internet pirating to continue that its laughable. What will be endangered? Well this site for one. My review of the Tudors alone would blacklist this site. Topless Robot and Rifftrax will be gone. Any fan site for shows, books, movies, wines, any fucking hobby you can think of, will be gone. The disclaimer that we do not own said interests would no longer be enough to protect these sites. They would need PERMISSION from the corporations and individuals who directly own the property. SO all you Star Wars fans? You'll need permission from LucasFilms. X-Men fans? Marvel. Superman and Batman? DC. Any Pixar films? Disney. Its ridiculous and unfair. For those who want to do something here ya go!
Most of us come to the Tao of Scoot due to Topless Robot. Help stop these bills or they will be gone.
I end with a great speech against another violation of Civil Liberties. Appropriately, this would be grounds for blacklisting the site under these bills.
"We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home." Edward R. Murrow spoke against the communist witch hunts of the 195os. Here we are defending the rights to freedom of information on the web. We cannot proclaim ourselves a free nation if we are so willing to trample freedom of the web in the hopes of stopping piracy.
